Am I “Typed Out”
February has been a very busy month for me as evidenced by my lack of posts this month. Having only started blogging a few months ago I still struggle at times to find time to submit quality posts on a regular basis.
The reason for this post is an article in this months issue of PC Magazine entitled: “All Typed Out?” The article made light of the tremendous surge in blogs during the past 4 months. Pulling data from Technorati, they calculated that the number of blogs grew from around 56 million in October to 63 million in January. Depending on how they calculated those numbers, I added 3 blogs in that 7 million increase.
They quoted a research firm, Gartner, that predicted that the total number of active blogs would peak at 100 million in 2007 before leveling off and dropping back to 30 million. This attrition is due to the fact that Half of all new bloggers abandon ship within the first three months.
Many other well paid intelligent people who know more about this than I do think otherwise. Here are some of their counter arguments:
- the technology for creating and aggregating blogs is still young
- we still haven’t seen mainstream saturation yet. I couldn’t find a single magazine devoted to blogging at B&N yet and only a couple of books.
- the software support is becoming more mainstream with Microsoft building blog publishing capability into the new version of Word.
- blogs have achieved penetration and acceptance in the corporate world in a very short period of time.
I agree that blogging is still in its infancy and has lots of room to grow. Personally this blog has been terrific in helping me become more educated and organized about our family’s finances. The reason for this is multifactorial and my wife needs some thanks as well. In her I have been lucky enough to find someone with similar financial habits. In my moments of weakness, which always seem to occur at Costco, she is a voice of reason. In return, I am a similar voice of reason when we need new outfits.
This blog has helped us get off to a great start here in 2007. We have reached the three month point and are just getting started on our journey. Hope that you all enjoy the journey with us!
